Media: Demand outstrips supply as more seek to buy businesses

In a recent appearance on The Mike Hosking Breakfast, Chris Small, Managing Director of ABC Business Sales, shared exclusive insights into a growing national trend: more people than ever are actively looking to buy a business in New Zealand.

Despite a slowing economy and softening job market, ABC has recorded a 30% increase in buyer enquiries year-on-year. At the same time, the number of new business listings has dropped by 10%, a supply-demand imbalance that’s creating strong conditions for sellers.

Chris Small on what’s driving demand

According to Small, much of this activity is being driven by new migrants, who are arriving in New Zealand with capital and a desire to secure their futures through business ownership. He also noted a shift in mindset among professionals, particularly those affected by recent redundancies, who are now exploring self-employment as a more secure and rewarding alternative to traditional career paths.

“We’re seeing a surge in people looking to buy a job for themselves,” Small said. “They want more control, more flexibility, and a better return on their time and investment.”

The hospitality, services, and construction sectors continue to see high levels of interest, with businesses in these industries proving especially attractive to hands-on operators.

Why sellers are in a stronger position than they realise

While the labour market remains tight and economic conditions uncertain, Small believes this environment actually encourages business ownership. “We’ve seen time and again that business sales are counter-cyclical. When people lose jobs or feel instability, they start to look at buying their own income stream.”

ABC Business Sales recently recorded its strongest May on record, completing 42 sales in a single month. Across the full year to March 2025, the firm completed over 400 business sales—a clear sign that confidence remains strong in the business ownership market.

As interest continues to climb, Small’s message to business owners is clear: if you’ve been considering selling, now is the time to act.
