In the world of business brokerage, every deal has its unique story—and this one is no exception. Recently, our broker Rick had the privilege of facilitating the sale of a charming motel, marking a new chapter in the journeys of two families.

Vendors Murray and Denise Devine, originally from Kaikoura, purchased the motel five years ago, shortly after the devastating 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes. Determined to rebuild their lives and create a thriving business, they took on the challenge of upgrading the motel and expanding its clientele. Their hard work paid off. Over the years, they secured contracts with coach tours, attracted holidaymakers, and built a strong corporate trade that kept the business bustling year-round.

Now, after successfully running the motel, Murray and Denise have sold the business and are excited to return to Kaikoura. They’re looking forward to semi-retirement, rebuilding their family home, and enjoying quality time with their loved ones.

On the other side of the world, purchasers Nirmal Singh and his wife were in Germany at the start of the COVID pandemic, having returned to her home country just before the outbreak. Like so many others, they became isolated due to travel restrictions, but the couple never lost sight of their dream to return to New Zealand.

Earlier this year, they decided it was time to make that dream a reality. Seeking a business opportunity that combined their love for the outdoors and rural living, they came across the motel. The location ticked all the boxes: an idyllic environment to raise their two young children and an established business with plenty of potential.

Negotiating a business deal from across the globe isn’t without its challenges, but thanks to Rick’s expertise and determination, the sale is now finalised, with settlement just around the corner. Nirmal and his family are eagerly preparing for their move, ready to embrace their new life in rural New Zealand.
