Chris Small on the link between sales and the economy
Speaking with Mike Hosking, Small said business sales activity closely reflects regional economic performance.
“The level of transactions we’re seeing aligns strongly with how different parts of the country are performing economically,” he explained.
The South Island is leading the recovery, with business sales up 70% year-on-year, signalling renewed confidence and investment. In contrast, Wellington has experienced a 10% decline, reflecting softer local conditions.
Regional momentum signals improving confidence
While economic conditions remain mixed, the sharp rise in completed sales suggests buyers are regaining confidence and sellers are successfully achieving deals.
The combination of strong transaction volumes, ongoing price growth, and record levels of confidentiality agreements being signed underlines that this is very much a sellers’ market, with motivated buyers competing for quality businesses.
What this means for business owners
As market activity strengthens across much of the country, Small says business owners should pay close attention to regional trends and timing.
Improving confidence, record transaction levels, and strong performance in key regions suggest that conditions may be aligning for owners considering their next move.
